I was told that being on ei was simular to being on social assistance. im aware that when on social assistance you get all your refund back even if you owe osap because you are considered low income. so im wondering if that is the same in this case.

When you are on E.I., EI is your income. E.I. is just like a job to income tax, you will have to claim that money at the end of the year on your tax form. It is never taxed enough too, so if you made okay money most of the year, then claimed a few months on EI, it will eat some of your tax return. It hurts that way. But the money your get on E.I. with far out way the money you would lose on your tax return. EI doesn't take into consideration any money you owe to OSAP or creditors.

Hi, i was wondering if i get osap while on ei, how dangerous could it be? i mean does the osap check the bank accounts and tax returns of every student or they do it randomly? and what will happen if they come to know about it?

OSAP funding is managed by MTCU - the Ministry for Training, Colleges and Universities. EI is now managed by the same ministry. So they ARE going to find out that you are getting both. If they don't find out in a routine computer check, they WILL find out when they do income verification, which they do every year. Consequences: you may lose your eligibility for the Ontario Student Opportunity Grant. You may find yourself in an overpayment situation. 2 over payment situations and you don't get any more OSAP until one of them is paid off. if SVCU (student verification and compliance unit) investigates you (and they investigate anyone who may have, by falsifying information, committed fraud, you may find yourself banned from receiving OSAP for up to 5 years. It's not worth the risk - especially if you are planning to go to school for 3 or more years. Or if you ever plan to get OSAP again in your life.

Can i be approved for unemployment after i've already started school...? well i started school august 10 and applied for unemployment the end of july and still they havent made a decision on my claim what do you guys think aboout my situation....ive applied for osap and have gotten approved and recieved the money... but because they are takin so0o long with my approval for ei im patiently waiting.. do you gys think i will be approved ?....

When pigs whistle. You probably will be able to get some assistance for a while if you're prepared to lie, and keep on lying. But you will have to be very, very careful not to make any mistakes, to trust no one who might betray you, and to make sure that there is no exchange of information between various government agencies. If you are found out, there are severe penalties, not the least of which is paying back whatever you've received. In some cases, it's possible to get legitimate support to study in a program that will improve your employability. And there are Student Loans.

You should see if EI will pay for your schooling first. Sometimes, you can get EI to pay for your schooling as well as collect-BUT it is has to be pre-approved before your start school and there are number of conditions. Otherwise, it is very hard to collect EI while going to school. The reason for that is that while going to school you are not "ready, able and willing" to work every day. EI sees it as you would must be willing to leave class in order to work-which is what EI is used for. (temporary wage replacement as you look for work) Even when you go to classes that are approved by EI, in theory you must be prepared to make the choice between school and a good job. Going to school while on EI nust also be reported as it will affect things for you. There are forms to fill out of the classes are over 8 hours in length.

I am going to college i started in may and end this year in may i am on osap and they paid for my schooling they only gave me and extra 1300 dollars extra to live on and told me to get a job too i got half of my 1300 in jun 2010 and the other half dec 1 2010 and i recently lost my job and am not eligible for ei can i apply for welfare will they know about osap? i am not getting an) more money from osap and have no job so i would assume i should be able to get welfare???

Do not apply for welfare, if osap finds out, they'll cut you off, and you'll be arrested (this happened to a women 4 years ago in Sudbury). If you have a disability, then apply for ODSP. Your allowed to be on both OSAP and ODSP at the same time.

In august of 2007, i was laid off my job and i immediatly applied for college to start in september. i contacted ei regarding their career retraining program, and they advised me that the application process was long and lenghly, and if i had already applied for osap i should just go that way and apply for benefits as a student. so i did that and i was approved. they knew i was in a two year program, a program that i was to find out later is always approved under their guidelines, and they paid me the whole first year. well then i find out that my friend is going through vpi to go to the same program, because she has been on ei in the last three years, they are going to pay for the whole thing and give her money for the whole two years. i have since completed my program, and i called ei and they are telling me its not retro active. how is this fair when they knew that i was student and should have given me the money anyway. now i am 26,000, dollars in debt and i think they should pay my loan from osap. what do i do? i was not told no! i wasnt given the correct information when i went to school, it is a six week process not a six month one. the man i spoke to never told me to go to the unemployment office and speak with a counselor, i was never given that option. they knew i was a student and they should have helped me anyway. ei is employment canada..they are a canadain agency that provide money for people who have been laid off, fired, or quit their jobs... to the second person, editor, this isnt a changed legislation, it has been more easier to get it though since all the lay offs. the point is, is that i was misinformed they should have given me more information and i would have at least went through for it for my second year in college. i will go to the mp though, i spoke to ei today for the third time and that is what she advised me to do!!

The federal govt USED to fund a WHOLE lot of similar social programs as well as EI MUCH! more fully. That was 'back in the day.' Uninformed voters then responded to the cost of those programs by giving Mulroney a whacking great majority. Blue Boys then proceeded to cut the heart and soul out of ALL those HARD!-won CCF-inspired programs, ultimately creating a new underclass forced to beg on the streets, the first time since the Dirty Thirties. Homelessness was virtually unheard of in Canada until Mulroney came to power. Eventually, when the last vestiges of those programs lay in tatters, voters said, 'Enough!' Sadly, Chretien and Martin then lied about their commitment toward refurbishing/renewing these things, preferring instead to boost the fiction of a budget surplus! The legal truth here is that you can't sue for enforcement of obligations gov't never had. Policy changes. Period. (That's why we vote!) Best advice: Discuss all of this boldly and loudly anywhere and everywhere but most particularly with Harper and your MP!

You should put this in yahoo answers canada. But- you should still receive unemployment aid- it takes forever and you can never get ahold of someone on the phone to speed it up lol. They dont see your student status either way.

I had no idea about employment insurance (ei). all i knew was that i did my reports and received money every two weeks. i knew when i got a job i wouldn't claim for ei anymore. in sept i started collecting osap i didn't know you couldn't collect both at the same time. when they ask you if you are doing training i thought they meant for a job. my mom called me and said my t4 slip came in from ei and she explained that i am in big trouble. she said i can get charged for fraud, and never get osap again. i can't contact them until monday. i will contact and i plan on paying them back. has anyone been in this situation? whats going to happen to me? will i still be able to go to school in sept to continue my education. anything will help, i am literally pacing the floor :(

I am collectiong ei in ontario canada, but i want to go to school and apply for osap.if the government gives me money to go to school, then they are going to cut me off from employment insurence and won't pay me anything any more, but i need to go to college and learn something. any information is appreciated

Because rent has been persistently late. now we have only lived here for 4 months. 2 times rent was late due to our own fault (osap payment was late, we have a letter from the school) and then this month because i am laid off and am waiting for my ei payment. the other two months are because the landlord lost the cheques i gave him, so he came days later to pick up the rent and then the second month because he found the cheques and tried to cash it after i had already informed him i had cancelled the cheques because he has lost them. which in turn froze my account for a few days... anyway just wondering what you guys think of this, does he have a valid argument to evict us? especially since only twice was it our fault, plus the n8 form say at end of term. our lease does not expire for another 8 months, can he even serve us with this form? thanks for your ideas and advice. please provide sources if possible. the landlord actually has given us 60 days to vacate. a truly feel that this is just an attempt on getting us to move out because we have been requested a number of repairs and he simply doesnt want to do them. within a few days of moving in there was a leak from our upstairs bathroom into the dinning room it was only finally repaired 2 weeks ago. talking to the neighbours all previous tenants have had similar issues with this landlord. anyway im still not sure if im reading the ltb website right. it says he can try to evict us at end of period or lease, what is classified as a period? and which would be applicable in my case since we have a lease until may 2010 thank you

You are correct the landlord can not serve you until 60 before the end of your lease. If you were a month to month tenant, the end of the term would be the end of a month. In any case, the N8 should say you do not have to move out if you dispute it. The landlord would have to serve you with a L2 form issued by the Landlord and Tenant Board and a notice of hearing. By way if your landlord is not making repairs in a timely manor you can file an application with the Landlord and Tenant Board.
