ive been looking this up latley, it seems they start off at 35,000 and after a period of 15 years there making about 60,000. i dont think they ever make 120,000 like EVER. good luck

Paralegals in Ontario start around 50,000 per yr. If a Paralegal has their own practice, add another approx. 20,000. I think a lot of people are confusing Paralegals with Law Clerks. Through today`s proper educational requirement in becoming a Paralegal by way of reputable community college, there isn`t much of a difference now between a Paralegal and a Lawyer. I will be graduating with my associates' degree in july. i am looking for work away from where i live (pittsburgh, pa). i went to toronto last year and fell in love. i understand there is a high cost of living, but i want to see if it would be possible to move there. a few questions: 1) do canadian law firms hire entry-level paralegals with american associates' degrees? 2) how hard it is to find a paralegal/legal assistant job in toronto? 3) how much would i have to earn in order to live? i am single and don't drink or drive. please provide figures in canadian and american dollars. 4) do i need to have my credentials assessed? 5) would knowledge of american law be advantageous? 6) would i need to learn the canadian legal system before i could find work?

I'm relocating to canada in a few months, but still tossing up living in toronto/calgary. i am a paralegal with six years' experience and half (!) a law degree...what sort of salary can i earn in either city? any advice would be fantastic. thanks for the information, it was very comprehensive. the only remaining question i have is whether my australian experience will be relevant in canada?

In Toronto and the Province of Ontario many paralegals act independant of lawyers. They handle such things as: small claims court, various tribunals, traffic tickets, criminal law (summary conviction). In Calgary, as far as I know a paralegal can not act in court on behalf of a client without a lawyer affiliation. A new law has been enacting in Ontario regulating paralegals by the Law Society. Many paralegals are upset about this new law, as it will limit the areas of practice that paralegals can offer, and signifigantly increase their cost of operating. I know many paralgals will be regulated out of business on May 1/07, who do: family law, family court documents, uncontested divorces, wills, estates, real estate, construction liens, and corporate records. I fear many other paralegals will be driven out of business due to the costs associated with regulation. Some important websites to look at if you are considering being a paralegal in Toronto are: www.e-laws.gov.on.ca (look at Bill 14 and the Access to Justice Act, 2006 Schedule C) www.lsuc.on.ca (the Law Society web site) www.paralegalsociety.on.ca (Paralegal Society of Ontario) www.pscanada.ca (Paralegal Society of Canada). As to your question about salary, I guess that depends on whether you work for a lawyer or as an independant. I personally am an indepdant paralegal. I should note that a paralegal working for a lawyer is exempt from regulation. I know the Paralegal Society of Ontario has quoted that a paralegal on average makes about $31,000.00/year . I don't know where that figure was obtained. A lot will also depend on what happens in the next couple years as the industry adjusts to regulation.

Hey everyone, please read my story and let me know what you think. i am a 19 y.o. female, living in toronto, on. im a permanent resident. shortly after i turned 18 i got caught shoplifting and taken to court but was fully dismissed. few months later, in dec/09 i applied for canadian citizenship. in february i got caught shoplifting again and taken to court in may where i was offered a diversion program (had to attend a lecture on evils of shoplifting) and charges were dropped. in october, few days ago i have received a letter from canadian government requesting my fingerprints. the letter states that "the citizenship act stipulates that a person cannot become a canadian citizen while under probation order, on parole, charged with an offense or in prison...a person who has been convicted of an indictable of fence or of an of fence under the citizenship act in the three year period preceding the application or thereafter is also unable to become canadian citizen...after reviewing the biological information on your application form, i understand there may be a question in your case under the provisions of sections blah blah blah..." i am being requested to have my fingerprints taken and submitted. my question is, am i still eligible for citizenship? or will i be refused citizenship because i was charged and under investigation during the time of my application(tho no criminal record, was not placed on probation or jailed) ? or will my application be delayed? what effect would my court appearances have on my application overall? i was thinking of requesting that my fingerprints/photos to be deleted from database; but it takes a few months and the letter states that i only have 60 days to submit my fingerprints in order to proceed with my application...my paralegal advised me not to worry but i thought id ask around...please share any knowledge/ideas, its much appreciated

I hope that they remove your PR and send you back to where you came from. You should not be even considered for naturalization--you are not of good moral character! Why would Canadians what some one like you remaining in their country?
