Back in grade 10 i dropped out of school and tried to start working but i had no luck with that and now im 18 and starting to go back to school but my parents want me to pay rent because they dont have enough income for themself and i cant work cause school is from 9-3 and if i do get a job its going to be night shift and i cant go to school the next day... is it possible that i can get welfare to pay for my rent/bus tickets? "if i do get welfare can i just rent my parents basement?" or do i got to move out and be independent? if i ask my (youth) probation officer would she help me try getting welfare or do i got to do it myself?

Nope. If you are on welfare (Ontario Works) you must be eligible to work and looking each week. If you are in school this makes you ineligible as well. Thirdly, if you are living with your parents or any relatives even if you are paying rent, you cannot qualify for Ontario Works. Best to get a job, and try to stay awake in the day, Millions of others do it. You can too.

My girlfriend and i are currently living with my parents and are hoping to get our own place soon, but we are taking care of bills and other expenses first. i have been out of work for little over a month, and it is hard to find a decent job. one place i even applied for turned out to be a scam trying to get $100 out of me and the hundreds of others who also applied and so called got the job. my girlfriend is pregnant and is expecting july 1st. my parents charge us room and board. my mom doesn't work and my dad is on disability. they are getting to the point where they want us out because it is getting harder for them to cope with their own problems. my girlfriend makes on a good month $1300(after taxes). i was making at my last job $20/hr, but the place ended up going under. i know i am not going to find a job paying that much anytime soon. i am going to be attending college though in the new year. do we make too much for me to qualify for ontario works? i have been applying to places but have yet to have anything work out. will they be able to do anything for us? we are common law. would it be better for me to apply by my self and not with a depended? thanks a lot.

I'm just planning to move out of my abusive marriage and to move with my 4 yrs old to toronto from another province. i found the place for living in toronto, just without any rental papers/agreement. the women who rent this place in toronto will move in a 2 month and sell her apartment. i can be with my son just 2 months in this apartment and without any rental agreement or something. i have the money just for the plane ticket for me and my son to toronto, no more money, just symbolic money. i'll ask when i arrive in toronto for the ontario work (welfare) because i have to pay the rent and have money for the food, just i don't know if i'll be allowed for it if i haven't any rental papers ? also, i can stay in this sharing apartment just for 2 months , after i should find another apartment. thank you

I think most provinicially based programs need proof of residence in the province. I think you need a place first before you can apply.

Count on a couple of weeks for sure, so make sure you plan carefully. The wheels of government do not tend to turn quickly.

I applied for my child tax benfit a year after my son was born i was getting it from ontario work from july 2008-febuary 2008 then i got my lumop sum from the government for my tax benifit from the past year. welfare with held my cheque for april because they told me on the phone it was withheld so they get paid back for giving me my tax benifit from july to febuary. i recieved my lump sum in march. what i dont understand is i would have owed them 1500? and they only took 910 which is my cheque amount from them? they didnt give me a letter a head of time. are they allowed to do that? i was told i didnt have to pay them a dime back... i live in ontario sarnia and im not sure if its different oter places but now ive paid my debts off and im broke!

Usually a lot of these programs work hand in hand with each other. It really depends on who is administering the programs and what agreements they have with each other and what you agree to when you become a client. Chances are because you are receiving social assistance they share information back and forth with the govt. So if you owe in one program they can collect it off another.

I am a recent graduate from college and i am having a lot of difficulty finding a job. i was on osap throughout the academic year, but recently ran out of money. i do have a part-time job, but that only manages to pay for my food and the few bills i have. i am currently staying on a friends couch and can only stay their until the end of may. can someone please tell me the best place to go to get help getting back on my feet other than ontario works (welfare).

Ontario Works or another job. Your college should hopefully have placement assistence to help you in your job search. If not, places such as the YMCA does a great deal of employement outreach. There are few options for recent grads, most end up back at mom and dads.

I live in Ontario. You don't pay it back. It is here for people who need it. If you quit your job or are fired, and apply, you will have to wait 3 months. The only time you have to pay it back is if they find out you got some checks fraudulently. I'm 23.. been back in ontario since may and can't find work.. i have been busting my butt trying. i've been researching & asking around & apparently there are lots of programs that get you work. but you have to be on ow.. i don't want to be on welfare.. but if it can help me find work i will do it. now, i am living with my aunt at her house.. & if i had income i'd be paying her $250 a month for room and board.. but i think she is on disability because she retired early due to her seizures.. will that effect the application for ow? i really, really don't want to be on ow.. but i have to find work asap.. and i've known a few people who went on ow just for the programs that are available and got work right away..

The name of the program says it all Ontario WORKS. It is a training program, that leads to a job, for you. Your Aunt's income is of no matter. Get in there and find out what they can do for you. Go tomorrow. They will do some testing/studies , to find out what your abilities are, and what level your math and reading are at, to see if you need to be up-graded in your basic educational levels. Some practical stuff like making meals/shopping for food, and personal hygiene are included, to get you up to speed on "living on your own ". Skills that are in demand by employers are taught. Being ready to learn and listen and not goofing around are important. Be serious and soak up the information. Take all the help that they will give you. Have goals and get them done.
