I can't find my health card. it's probably somewhere in my room but i don't have time to look for it. can i see a doctor anyway? if i pay for the visit, can i get reimbursed by the government when i find my card? i'm a regular ontario, canada citizen.

Your doctor can ask you to pay up front. Other doctor's will give you a certain time period to get a new card and you can call them with the number and version code. Some doctors will have you fill out what is called a "health number release form" where you give your name and date of birth and authorize the Ministry of Health to give out your health number and current version code. (which is where having the number on file doesnt cut it for people with photo health cards-the version code changes when you renew, and older photo cards changed version codes if you changed your address) If your doctor does ask for you to pay, AND if it is a covered benefit of OHIP you can fill out forms to be reimbursed by OHIP. Expect to wait awhile though, for reimbursement. If your address is correct on file & you have a photo health card, you can call OHIP and report your card as lost and they will send you a new one in about 4 weeks. (there is a delay right now) If you do not have your current address on file, you have to go to an OHIP office to change your address (they will give you a print out to use in the meantime) or you can mail your address into OHIP and a card will come out to you. (Address changes cannot be done over the phone-nor can OHIP give out your number over the phone) If you have a red and white health card, you need to go to an office to get another other card. You will need 3 different things. One is your proof of Canadian citizenship. (eg Canadian Birth Certificate, Canadian Passport, Status Card) One is proof of your current Canadian residence. (Ontario drivers license, utility billl-MUST show a residencial address, not box number) The last is an item off their list with your name AND signature on it. (credit card, bank card etc) All documents must be original-no photocopies.

I think it's because the way the ontario gov pays a family doctor compared to specialists. i am told that there is actually no shortage of family doctors in actual numbers. however many of them don't want to work as family doctors because it pays too little. they work instead in emergency rooms, hospitals, and cosmetic clinics. i was told a family doctor gets a miserly $30 from the gov for a visit regardless of what the visit is for. out of that $30, they are supposed to pay for the office expenses, secretary, etc. this is a shame!

I agree. and the Ontario government keeps saying they are fixing the problem by "training" more family doctors and bringing more family doctors from other (mostly 3rd world) countries. These new doctors too, will leave the profession as soon as they are trained!! my hairdresser gets paid more for a visit than my doctor!!! no wonder they don't want to do that job.

Her card expired and we are waiting on the new one to arrive in the mail. if she were to get hurt or sick and have to be taken in to get looked at before we get the new card, i'm assuming we're going to have to pay for the doctors visit? i'm hoping that doesn't happen, but considering she is an active 2 year old, there is always the possibility that she could hurt herself. i got a notice telling me i could mail a form in so i never had to visit an office.

No you will not have to pay. You just give them the expired one and tell them you have applied for a new one...If it was extended time they would bill you but once you get your card they would cover it all anyways.

I went to a dropin clinic and an eye doctor wants to charge me 400 dollars to take off one skin tag on my eyelid. he is already getting paid for the office visit. they used to be done in a gps office for free.......... its not for cosmetics. it looks awful and its causing me headaches...........

Unfortunately that's considered 'cosmetic' since it really poses no threat to health and is just something that esthetically people want done. So, that's why its not covered.

I'm visiting my boyfriend in the states and i'm on my last pack of birth control pills. i obviously don't have insurance since it would do me no good since i don't live here. i do have my health card for ontario which is suppose to pay 50% but i feel that's just a hassle. so would it be cheaper to go to planned parenthood, a walk in clinic, or a normal doctor? what is the going rate? i've read $145 and $70 for any tests done ex. pap.

Forget the clinic/doctor. If all you need is birth control pills, go to a planned parenthood center. They are dirt cheap and respected everywhere. Good Luck! You will fill out a bunch of papers about your health and if you know what the name of your pills are, they charge around 25$ for the pills and possibly up to 75$ for the visit. Though prices are different everywhere. I am in Wisconsin and our cost of living (other than gas) seems to be lower than others...

I work for a doctor in ontario (bookkeeping , management) for 3 months now and even though you would think i have some form of authority ....i do not. i cannot get anything done because he has trust issues with employees. he tries to force me to mis-lead tax authorities & other companies to pay less taxes and insurance and so on. anyways, the case here is that he over bills ohip for non-visits and uses the wrong billing code to make more money (ex: uses consulting code instead of regular visit to earn $40 extra per patient), sometimes even makes up patient visits. also, he lets non-medical employees in the clinic give shots to patients so that he does not have to pay a certified nurse. he does not clean his equipments specially ones for pap tests(that one he just swaps with alcohol and not sanitize it). constantly cancels his appointments for his "hair" appointment , golf game, seeing his girlfriend, and being too "stressed". he evades taxes by reporting more expenses (inserting personal ones such as purchase of beer, coffee, grogercy for his house) and not entering fully his revenue. he has people work under the table to not pay payroll deductions, refuses to pay overtime and holidays. he has businesses in u.s and canada but does not report foreign income. read this for further clarification: http://www.ratemds.com/doctor-ratin gs/41964/on/st.-catharines/attallah now, where to exactly report him? because i seriously lost all interest in working for him from trying to force me to do all these unethical activities since my name can get involved if audited. i am not getting even paid enough for this ($12/hr). would it be better to report him to the media, and how ? where else can i report his disgusting habits in the clinic ?? i know i am going to report his tax fraud to irs and cra. he does medical activities in canada ; but he rents apartments that are not repaired at all in niagara falls, ny under akeed inc.

All physicians have a governing body. In this case, it's the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Report this doc's indiscretions to them. They'll investigate and if they find evidence to support your claims, they'll take action. Hi i'm katie, i'm 24 and i'm moving to canada to be with my girlfriend of 3 years. we plan on buying a home after we get married. but for now, we'll be staying with her brother. i guess i just wanted to know, what road to take on getting my citizenship. i heard i can apply for it while living in ontario. would it be easier to get married and then apply? i have a dog here, i'm getting him slipped over because i don't have the time to get him vaccinated. i'm leaving for ontario on friday. my friend is going to take care of him until; i get the money to ship him. also, while living there if i should get injured can i visit a doctor and make payments or pay cash?

After this is done, you need to wait three years to qualify for citizenship. There is a test as well. You can stay in Canada as a permanent resident and never apply to become a citizen. However, you can't vote and you have to keep a clean record. There have been cases of non-citizens being deported for committing crimes. The dog would need vaccinations such as rabies and you should do this. He could be turned back (I am assuming he'd be crossing the US border?) Better to be safe about it. If you get injured or need to see a doctor, you'll need some private health coverage or pay cash while you wait to qualify for the public provincial health plan in Ontario . Right now americans have the freedom to see any doctor, get any surgery, or mri. i got an mri of my neck for just $250 cash last week with no wait. many doctors will give you up to 50% discount if you pay cash. i see my family doctor for 50 dollars a visit. he charges insurance $110 if i didn't pay cash. under gov care, this freedom would be taken away, you would not be able to get any of these even if you paid. like in ontario, canada privately paying a doctor to get service is illegal, because they say it is not fair to the welfare bums in line, for you to pay and get service faster!!! big part of the problem is they think someone else has to pay for their doctor care. what's wrong with dishing out 60 bucks for a doctor visit?? they pay that in a heartbeat for shoes, records and night on the town. but not for seeing the doctor.

Our past administrations have "allowed" a lot of freeloaders into our country to become "legal",not citizens,as well as that element of our society who are also freeloaders looking for a free lunch.No one dies under the present system unless they can't find a hospital,or they're too dumb to ask directions to one.Both parties are at fault,and we need to replace every one of them in congress,and start over.No matter who we vote in,we can't get any worse than we have now.Everyone who stays current on this issue finally know that our government has been lying to us every since the "Coronation" in Jan.and should help defeat these "misfits" in 2010.If we miss this chance,then we all can kiss our America good bye for good! I'm soon to be a canadian permanent resident (by the end of march). i live in ontario. my wife is american and lives in new york. we recently found out she was pregnant and she is coming over to stay with me for the rest of the pregnancy. i don't mind paying the doctor visits while she's uncovered but we want her to be covered be ohip by the time the child is due (sept 21st). i've seen that there's a three month waiting list for ohip coverage but some sources seem to imply that the 3 months are counted from the time she sets foot into canada. are the three months counted from the start of the application for pr or from her arrival in canada? are there other alternatives to get coverage during the prenatal months such as traveler insurance? thanks

A lot depends on your status at the moment in Canada. If your wife enters Canada as a tourist, she will have to leave after six months. The three month period is counted from the first day that an immigrant enters Canada legally as a permanent resident. Did you not list your wife on your immigration application? If you did, she could join you when the PR comes through. If you are in Canada on a work permit, you could include her. You are going to find it difficult to get travel insurance for a birth.
