    Q. Please help!!!! renters rights in bc landlord was not my landlord!?

    Powered by
So my "landlord" who i have been renting or at lease writing checks too for the last 4 years tells me (she lives in the basement) that she sold the house but the new owners want to rent it to us. okay... so i say that's fine and a couple days later the property manager shows up to look at the house.. he seems very confused and i se him talking to my "landlord" on the lawn he phones me tonight and tells me that lindsay said we wanted to stay but we will have to apply to be a tenant because he didnt even know we were there.. they might not want to rent to us.. after talking to him for awhile i discover she never owned the house! she lied to me?! so were does that leave me? she is moving out on the 15 of june... do they he said he wont just kick us out but do they even legally have to give us notice? is this illegal and am i entitled to some kind of compensation from linsday? please help, im so worried i have somewhere to go as of september 1st but before that im screwed!

"But considering the property manager didn't make a fuss and..."

You had a place to live and nothing happened to you so you're not entitled to any compensation. In short, you were subletting from Lindsay whether or not the actual owner knew it or not. But considering the property manager didn't make a fuss and simply informed you that you could apply to be a tenant it means that they might consider letting you stay on on an official lease (assuming you qualify or can afford a security deposit etc). But if you paid a security deposit, you might want to make sure Lindsay gives that back. What she did is illegal if her lease with the owner/property manager disallows it. But if there's no such clause, she was legally entitled to rent it to you.

    Q. Does anyone know about the tenancy laws in bc?

    Powered by
My landlord has served us with an eviction notice, his reason given for the eviction is that in 1987 he sold the land to the provincial government for expropriation, and that he no longer wishes to be a tenant to the provincial government. the truth is that the house that we rent is falling apart and he refuses to make any repairs. we have always paid our rent on time ($1100), and have paid quite a bit of money for repairs around the house out of our own pockets, and we painted the entire house. when we rented from him i was 6 months pregnant, and we were led to believe that this was going to be a long term place for us to live, even though we did not sign any rental agreement. so now we are in the position of having an 11 week old baby, a dog, and having to find somewhere in the next 2 months to live. my landlord has acknowledged the fact that he owes us the equivilant of 1 months rent on or before the day we move out, to me this does not seem like enough. what about the repairs? are we expected to live with all the problems around here, the kitchen sink leeks like crazy, the tiles are falling off in the shower, and all he has done is to cover the walls with plastic and duct tape, he sliced the bathroom floor linoleum by accident and now the bare floor underneath is exposed, none of our outlets or light switches have covers, etc, etc. i don't think that it is fair for him to not have to pay for the repairs, and continue to collect 1100 dollars every month, when he was not even honest enough to tell us that he doesn't own the land, rather that it belongs to the govenment!! pl ease, any advice would be apreciated, as i can not really afford to seek legal representation- thank you.

"Not a very safe place to be living with a soon to be toddler..."

Sounds to me like it is not a very safe place to be living with a soon to be toddler . I certainly wouldn't be complaining about having to move... I'd be "getting the hell out of Dodge" (moving) regardless. Just my humble opinion. .
