I am in the same boat. You have to send an appeal letter to theOSAP board (for cedit), but yes yu can get OSAP if you are in Second Career. BAd credit and Second career go nicely together, as you are only able to get second career if you have a job loss. All you have to do is prove to osap that your credit problems occured AFTER the job loss by giving them are ROE and a credit report, plus do a detailed budget showing how you expect to repay your loans and proof that you will be able to find a job once you graudate.

Hello. shango muffin here. i am curious, if a person is not able to pay off her osap and is having financial difficulties throughout the year; would this effect her potential to get a job (any job in general) ??? besides gov jobs and financial related jobs, what other specific type of employers will reject you based on your bad credit? if people hold your bad credit against you by not hiring you.... how the heck are you supposed to make $$$ in order to pay off your overdue payements/depts and move on with your life?!? people are young, inexperienced and make mistakes when it comes to loans and credit... how can the established world hold this against them??? anybody??

Many companies in Canada do credit checks on potential employees. While this may or may not impact on whether you get hired depends on the kind of job you are going for. I would strongly recommend that you get your OSAP loan under control. There is no excuse for defaulting on OSAP as there are several methods of dealing with loan payments that are too high. If you have not gone to collections yet, contact the National Student Loan Service Centre and ask for an Interest Relief package. If you are approved for Interest Relief the government will pay the interest on your loan for 6 months and you do not have to make any payments on the principal. At the end of the 6 months, if you are still not working, you can request another Interest Relief package and get another 6 months. You can do this NINE times -- so counting the first 6 month grace period right after you graduated, that gives you FIVE YEARS to get working and start paying off. The only problem you may run into is that your loans have to be in good standing in order to be approved for Interest Relief, so if you owe some months of payment, they will have to be dealt with. Perhaps a loan from a family member?

I have credit for someone elses loan that they are not repaying. it is affecting my credit and i am worried when i need to apply for osap. i read that osap does not deny you education even if you have bad credit. is this true or am i going to run into problems?

If you own child support and have bad credit history can you still get osap?

you will fail the credit check if, in the last 3 years you have had 3 or more accounts with a combined value of more than $1000 that are more than 90 days in arrears. If you fail the credit check, you can appeal the decision. Your school should be able to provide you with the brochure on credit appeals.

I have a bad credit on my visa card that's around $2000. it has been 1 year that collection agencies stopped calling and up to now i have never made a payment. i'm applying to osap now and i'm afraid that i won't be able to get any because of this bad credit i have. is it still possible for me to get approved for osap?? ballock jeans: this website does not help much as its specific question...anyone out there knows?

i dont believe so at least try I know on the application its ask if you have had credit cards also if you have apllied for bank bankruptcy

It is possible to still get OSAP if you have bad credit. Sometimes, a person may think they have bad credit but they are not so bad that they fail the criteria for OSAP. You must have 3 or more accounts in collections with a combined value of over $1,000 that mare more than 90 days in arrears in the last 3 years. If you have 2 things, it doesn't count. If you have 5 things but the value is less than $1,000 it doesn't count, etc. So if you really do fail the credit check you can do an appeal. Your financial aid office can provide the borchure explaining and the form. You must convince OSAP that the reason for your poor credit history is some extenuating circumstance beyond your control - loss of a job, death, divorce, etc. But you have to prove the circumstance with plenty of documentation.

If you can satisfy the appeal board that the poor credit rating was as a result of a one time event like loss of job, marriage breakdown, etc and you can provide proof along with a detailed explanation of what happened, what you did to rectify the situation andhow you plan to pay back your student loans, you stand a fair chance of getting OSAP.

Yes you are eligible for OSAP. The Ontario government guarntees the loan while you are in college. It is the financial institution that may be hesitant to loan you the money.

My friend was asking me last night over a very emotional phone call how she could consolidate her debts before she gets married in august of 2009 and before her osap payments start in june 2009. i didn't know what to tell her so i figured i would ask on here. the debt i think is around $7 000.00 not including the student loan. she doesnt have good credit at all since shes had these debts for about 5 years with no payments.

It doesn't work that way. You have to address YOUR OWN ISSUES and a generic letter will get you denied so fast .... This is what you do: 1. get a copy of your credit report 2. fill out the credit appeal form (available from your financial aid office) 3. explain what caused you to go into debt. Refer to the entries in your credit report because the appeal board has a copy of it and they are referring to it. 4. explain what you are doing to get out of debt. 5. explain what your career goal is 6. explain how you are going to pay back your student loan Provide proof for every statement that you make in step 3. So if you lost your job, include your ROE. If you became ill, give doctor's notes, hospital reports. If you were divorced or suffered a family breakdown, supply court documents, letters from social workers, whatever. Remember, every statement you make must be backed up by documentation. Also your bad credit must be for some exceptional circumstances beyond your control.
