Yes, if you are going to be late paying a bill at all, call the company and le them know, they will at the very least have dicumented that you made the effect to contact them and I have never had an issue with it showing up on my credit report in the past when I have called. Although if it`s constant it will show up, but 1-2 times every couple years is okay.

I made one late payment and it was reported to the collection buruea. how would it effect me in the future? ie: buy a car, house, loans, and etc...

One time late is no big deal, your score will drop but as long as you make the next 6 as agreed your score will recover and lenders will not hold it against you.

My husband and i are preapproved for a home loan scheduled to close in about 45 days. we are currently late on a credit card payment because we put down "earnest" money for our new home. we are going to make a payment to get current on all of our credit cards this week. our loan officer said she will wait until we are current before submitting our final info to the mortgage lender. are we likely to be denied the loan as a result of late credit card payments so close to closing?

Many credit card companies will only report a late payment if the account gets more than 60 or 90 days past due. Missing a payment may not kill your credit. I would contact your credit card company and ask them not the report the late payment; you may find that they are happy to oblidge. Remember, they are making a lot of money on the late payment, and they don't have incentive to trash your credit.

I was late by 3 hours on my credit card had to pay a $39 late fee this was back in february i was told that on credit cards you can be up to several days late without it effecting your score is this true? thanks

Ditto what the other answerers said. Credit bureaus only show late payments in 30 day increments. One other thing, I would ask the credit card company for a courtesy refund of that $39 fee if it was truly 3 hours (basically a day) late. If that's the only time you've ever been late, they will usually refund one fee for you.

I totally forgot to make the payment on a credit card. when i got my next bill it had the balance from the previous statement, a late fee and the new transactions. i paid the total balance as soon as i got the statement, and realized i forgot to pay the previous bill.will this one late payment affect my credit rating? i never carry a balance and pay the card off every month. this was a one time mistake.

Ok so i have 2,3 credit cards, and i'm so lazy to pay the bills. so i haven't used my cards lately, but for not paying it up i keep getting late fees charged. i got like $300 late fees on my cards all together. i keep saying i'll call them but i don't. i have weird schedule. i work at night, and sleep during the day. is there a way to get them fees knocked off? i mean, it's just too much. and any advice on how to not be lazy about playing the bills. can i make them directly take the money out of my bank account?

If your late payment was a 1 time thing then they might be nice and remove the fee for you. However, if you are constantly late this is not going to happen. Also, if you are always late you have(or will be) bumped up to the default interest rate which is in the 30%+ range. If you can not trust yourself to spend a few minutes to pay your bill on-time there are a couple of things to do. Check with your credit card company if they have on-line bill payment. If they do they probably have an option to automatically pay your bill every month. However, this usually will just pay the minimum and if you keep it at that amount it will take forever to pay off your account. The second option is to check with your bank that has your checking account. Most also have an On-Line bill pay that they can do the similar thing.

I paid 2 credit card payments late by only a day and my apr skyrocketed up to 27%. it was on the same card and it happened only twice and by only a few days. can it be lowered?

There are several credit card companies that are shooting their interest rate way up and for any reason or for no reason. Actually they like people like you because you pay the late fees and jack up their earnings. You need to apply for another card and the price you pay is a 3% transfer fee. Try www.firstnational.com. They offer some nice cards and have been really easy to deal with. When I changed over to them, they offered free interest on all charges for a year but had to pay that 3% transfer fee. Capital One used to give free transfer but have raised their rates so I'm getting rid of them by paying them off and chopping the card. Each time I have let a balance accumulate or used it for a big purchase, they have immediately jacked up my rates. I will NEVER use them or anyone like them. Beware of Citicard and Chase cards too. They are jacking up rates too. The trick on credit cards is to not get hooked so they can abuse you and live within your means and then take advantage of what they offer. I use my credit card for everything and pay it off weekly without fail. I accumulate a point for each $1 spent and for every 2500 points I get $25. I'm using them. They aren't using me. It's all a game so if you play, make sure you understand the rules or don't play. And my other trick to make sure I don't screw up is the minute they email me my statement is ready, I go to their website and make the minimum payment or more to be sure I don't forget.

Had a $20 charge that was forgotten about on a unused credit card. after 2 months, it changed from n/a to delinquent. on the third month, i finally found it and promptly paid it. however, it's dropped my score significantly. it was only $20 - anything i can do?

It'll stay on your credit record for 7 years, but its not gona make a big difference in your credit score. There's a couple of options. You can either call your credit card company & ask them to remove the late charge & explain the situation (you might hafta offer them some money, cuz that's what they are in for), or you can call one of those Lexington Law Places (its a credit repair company), but they charge so much money, and this is probably gona make a 2 point difference in your credit score. I worked for a bank in the finance department, and it doesn't make a big difference, as long as youre back on time & stay on time with your payments. It is a case card payment. how many days do they give you to pay without penalty on a monthly payment

There is no grace period for a "late" credit card payments. You will be charged a late fee, and if the missing payment and next payment are not paid by next due date, it would likely show up on your credit report. In the good old days they used to give you a break if it was at least postmarked by the due date. But other than one credit card I know of that lets you skip your January payment if you have not been late the previous year, if they receive it a day late, you will likely see the late fee.

Were the late payments consecutive? If so, that is probably worse than forgetting a payment once a year. Call your credit card company and ask for a courtesy update on your payment history. They might surprise you. Whether the late payments will affect your credit score depends on how the credit card company reported your pay history to the consumer reporting agencies (Experian , Equifax, and TransUnion). Many times a company does not report a 30-day delinquency, so if your missed payments did not occur consecutively there might be no issue at all. Your credit score does matter. It can affect your ability to get a job, an apartment, a mortgage, a car loan, etc. People with the best credit ratings/history get the most favorable loan repayment terms. For example, a great credit rating might qualify you for a 2.9% APR auto loan on a new car, but a middle credit rating might have you paying 6% or more. Credit is a tricky beast, though. I would recommend you do some reading up on how credit scores work. Each consumer is allowed one free credit report once per year from each of the three credit reporting agencies.
