Q. What happens if you do not file your income taxes?

I have a family member who has not filed income taxes in about 7 years. the cra has seized his bank account. what else can they do? will he go to jail? he has been self employed for most of the years and as far as i know he has not kept records of his income. how can he go about filing? the cra has assessed that he owes $30,000. will he go to jail or will they put a lean on his house? any knowledgeable answers appreciated! he is in ontario canada

Jail time is a possibility, but it doesn't happen often. CRA will keep going after his assets first. If he doesn't have enough money in his bank account, they will go after his house. The best thing for him to do is to settle with CRA. He should talk to an accountant first to get an idea of what his exposure is. If they've assessed him only $30,000 for the last 7 years, that sounds pretty cheap to me. He should settle as quickly as possible with CRA so he can get his life back.
